Be A Successful WAHM

I think the first and foremost, it takes patience to be a successful WAHM. It is not as easy as it looks, even though you do get to work in your bathrobe sometimes.

For example, as I sit down to write, I get a cold shock on the back of my arm. Why you ask?

Because my daughter beat me in here by about 5 minutes and hung a pair of wet jeans on my chair. It isn't office politics (although some days it might be office potty!) but it is slightly annoying and not something that you likely have to deal with working at a "real" office - if it is, you probably should look into working at home :0)

Oh, the things you put up with to be a successful WAHM!

It could be a lot worse!

Here are some tips on how to be a successful WAHM...

Rule number one - always check to see that the laundry hanging on your chair is dry!

And stay out of the cookies and ice cream - convenience foods are a real and present danger to a lady trying to be a successful WAHM!
On a more serious but equally important note...

Don't give up prematurely - There is no sense beating a dead horse if you know it's dead, but don't give up just because you are working hard trying to get "over the hump", especially when starting out. There will be days when you feel like giving up, everyone has them.

Don’t give in to those feelings. It is not possible to be a successful WAHM overnight. You are going to have to put in a lot of time and effort when it comes to building your business, but you can do it.

Take a Break - It is ok and recommended to take a “mental health day” at least once per week.

If you don't take the day off from business completely, which is the first choice, at least either do something you enjoy, or something you don't always get to but should be done so that you will feel accomplished, or do what ever you are doing in a relaxed manner - don't play beat the clock on these days.  And be sure to get back in the groove when your "day off" is over. Time management is vital if you want to be a successful WAHM.
Interruptions - When working in an office environment, one of the key reasons for lack of productivity is interruptions. The same goes at home, sometimes double!

If you have kids at home, it can be unending. As a matter of fact, I'm sure that
I developed a condition that I call "split brain syndrome" from the years of working with at least one child, many times more, talking in my ear and expecting a reply - my daughter once told me that I talk slow - I told her she would too!

On top of that you will have the telephone, many times telemarketers (I wonder if they are working at home) and worse, people who really expect you to stop what you are doing (it is hard to get taken seriously sometimes) to answer or call back.

And then there are the drop ins and unavoidables - people picking up or dropping off your kids or other paraphernalia (kid related or otherwise). Some of them can't be helped, others can although it can take some tact or you may find it very easy to alienate those from the "other world", those who work "outside".

Bottom line on interruptions is to minimize them when ever you can as they can take over your life. Don't encourage them, sometimes even the slightest provocation can set in motion a landslide of them, take your business seriously and remember to say "it's time to get back to work".

Motivation - We are our own boss, this can be both liberating and binding, since we need to motivate ourselves to be successful WAHM s!

Stay motivated by hanging up pictures of your kids near your computer or phone and writing down what you want to accomplish by working at home. Maybe you want to pay off credit card debt or save for retirement or buy the kids a pool.

Whenever you feel discouraged – read what you wrote down or look at the pictures of your kids. It will inspire you to keep working! And maybe keep your old work uniform handy, it will bring back memories that will be sure to get you back to it! (if it makes you long for your old job, that's a different story!)

Get a Mentor - Try to find a mentor – someone who has already found success in the work at home field you have chosen. They know exactly what you are going through and can offer advice when you ‘get stuck’ on something. They can also help keep you accountable when it comes to your goals. And they can also give you good advice and save you a lot of time on doing the "wrong" things, since they have already been there and done that.

Set Goals - If you haven’t taken the time to write down your goals, take the time now. By having your goals written down on paper you will have a clear definition of what you want. Once you have them on paper, take a closer look at each one and write down specific action steps you can take now to achieve them. For instance, if your goal is to build a website, what are three things you can do today to accomplish that? And keep them in front of you until they are crossed off your list of accomplishments. Keep looking forward toward your goals and you will find yourself achieving success!

Comb your Wins and Losses - This is similar to weeding. A few times a year at minimum, look to see what is working for you and what isn't. Do more of the good stuff and drop the bad. This one piece of advice will take you far in your quest for WAHM success.

Learning to be a successful WAHM does take a lot of courage, self discipline, patience and dedication.

But if you enjoy what you are doing, and your motivation to be at home is strong enough, you can succeed.
