Outdoor Chores...
A Family Thing

Are outdoor chores a family thing at your house?

It might not be the first thing that comes to mind when your family thinks of fun, but doing them together can have some great benefits that your kids will notice too, although it may take them awhile - like when they have kids :0)

Now that it's time to be outdoors more, including everyone in the family to participate in the upkeep of the front and back yard spaces of your home is important to keep it beautiful and safe to play in.

There are lots of chores that need to be delegated in the yard. Let children choose which tasks they would enjoy the most and encourage them to be successful with them.

Some chores that might need to be assigned include:

  • Raking grass clippings and leaves. Assign an older child to rake and younger children to put them into a bag. Young children really enjoy jumping in leaf piles, so allow some extra time for this.
  • Buying new supplies. Send one child with a parent to pick out flowers, buy fertilizer, carrying tools, etc. By including them in the beginning process, they will be eager to follow up with planting.
  • Weeding the flower beds. Teach children which plants are weeds and what aren’t so they can help you keep the flower beds looking happy and gorgeous.
  • Having each member of your family help you spread the mulch.
  • Having the kids start a compost pile.
  • Building a new birdhouse and filling it with birdseed. Be creative and build one from scratch together.
  • Watering the flowers. What is it about children and their natural attraction to water? Especially when it is being sprayed everywhere. Allow even young children to use the hose on a gentle nozzle setting to keep the flowers and grass watered.
  • Digging. You may decide to put a rock border around your flower bed. Work with your child's interest in dirt to dig the holes needed for this embellishment.
  • Mowing the lawn - this can be done by older children with careful supervision. Teach them how to use the lawnmower carefully and effectively.

There are probably more chores you can think of to assign to each family member.

Depending upon the weather, of course, working in the backyard or garden allows your kids to not only have fun, but become involved in every aspect of planting.

They will have the opportunity to see the backyard come to life and will begin to appreciate nature as well, a diminishing gift in the growing concrete jungle so common these days.

The more you involve your kids, the easier it will be for outdoor chores to become a family thing in your household.
